Testing Approach

In testing and evaluation conducted by GolfBallTest.org, the Innovex V-Motion and E-Motion were subjected to bench testing for compression, cover hardness, weight and to player and robot testing using the driver, 6-iron and sand wedge.

Source: Digital Ball Catalog™ at GolfBallSelector.com

Notable Observations

Player testing was conducted across a range of ball speeds on the V-Motion and E-Motion golf balls. Overall, the V-Motion exhibits spin and launch angle characteristics similar to the 2011 Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x, TaylorMade Penta TP5, Callaway HEX Black Tour, Bridgestone Tour B330-S and Srixon Z-STAR off all clubs (driver, 6-iron, and 56 degree wedge) from High and Mid ball speed levels. The E-Motion had substantially lower spin across all ball speeds off the 56 degree wedge, similar to the Top-Flite Gamer V2, Noodle Long and Soft, and Titleist Velocity golf balls.

Driver Testing:

The spin rate of the V-Motion was approximately 250-350 RPM’s lower than the Titleist Pro V1 and Nike 20XI-S across low, mid and higher ball speeds. The V-Motion’s overall distances were 2-3% higher when compared to the Titleist Pro V1 and Bridgestone Tour B330-S primarily due to a higher launch angle and the lower spin for all ball speeds tested. By comparison, the E-Motion showed very low spin numbers off the driver for our low ball speed test but good overall distance results due to a higher launch angle. Mid to High speed results were more middle of the range for both spin and launch angle.

6-Iron Testing:

6-iron testing across all ball speeds for both the V-Motion and E-Motion exhibited less spin and slightly longer carry distance when compared with the Pro V1, Pro V1x, and Gamer V2.

Sand Wedge Testing:

The V-Motion had notably more spin and launch angle (3-5%) for the sand wedge than the Pro V1 and Pro V1x at all ball speeds tested and slightly more spin when compared to the Nike 20XI-Sand 20XI-X. Launch angles were slightly lower across all ball speeds when compared to the Bridgestone Tour B330 and Tour B330-S as well as the Callaway HEX Black Tour. The E-Motion ball showed its major differential in the sand wedge area of testing. Very low spins and very high launch angles were observed across all ball speeds. This characteristic is found in the Top-Flite Gamer V2, Noodle Long and Soft, Titleist Velocity, and the Wilson Staff DUO.

Bench Testing:

Our bench testing indicates that the V-Motion has an overall compression reading of 109 points, which is comparable to the 2011 Titleist Pro V1x and about 10% higher than the overall compression reading of the 2011 Titleist Pro V1. The E-Motion has an overall compression reading of 99 points, which is comparable to the 2011 Titleist Pro V1. Additional bench testing measuring cover hardness revealed that the V-Motion with its urethane cover exhibited similar cover hardness to the 2011 Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x. The E-Motion exhibited a much firmer cover hardness that was among the firmest covers we have tested. The E-Motion is similar in cover hardness to the 2012 Titleist Velocity and 2010 TaylorMade Burner. We weighed* both balls on the Ohaus SP402 Scout scale. The V-Motion weighed 1.6140 ounces and the E-Motion 1.6040. By comparison the Titleist Pro V1 weighs 1.6140, the Bridgestone Tour B330-S 1.611, the Callaway HEX Black Tour comes in at 1.610 and the TaylorMade Penta TP5 1.6175 and Nike 20XI-S and 20XI-X at 1.6140 as well.
*Note: USGA and R&A Rules of Golf Appendix III stipulates the weight of the ball must not be greater than 1.620 ounces.

On-Course Player Comments:

“The V-Motion feels softer than the new Callaway HEX Black Tour and TaylorMade Penta TP5 balls and comparable to the Titleist Pro V1 and Bridgestone Tour B330-S especially off the putter and sand wedge”. “When comparing the V-Motion to the E-Motion, I seem to get more spin and feel around the greens with the V-Motion although the E-Motion especially with the wedge seems to carry further on full wedge shots.”

“The V-Motion spins every bit as much as the Titleist Pro V1. On approach shots, the V-Motion felt like the ball was completely controllable and acted as expected upon green impact. Off my stainless steel faced putter it felt very much like a Titleist Pro V1 – it putted extremely well with a tight end over end roll”.

Summary:

Mid to High ball speed players looking for a 3 piece “tour ball” should consider the Innovex V-Motion ball. Golfers looking for distance without spin in their shorter irons might consider the E-Motion. Golfers of any ball speed should benefit from the slightly higher launch characteristics of both of these balls. Additionally both exhibited slightly more distance on all clubs on a comparative basis for the driver and 6 iron. The Innovex V-Motion should appeal to golfers of all abilities but particularly to mid to high ball speed players looking for a comprehensive ball with its softer cover hardness and consistent spin at an attractive retail price. The E-Motion golf ball should appeal to golfers looking for a slightly firmer golf ball on and around the green, with particular lower spin off the sand wedge at any ball speed.

In choosing the right golf ball, GolfBallSelector.com believes that golfers interested in the Innovex V-Motion and E-Motion should consider its “best fit” potential for their game in the context of their own preferences and the trade-offs they are prepared to take for distance, control and feel and according to their own unique ballistics measures of ball speed, launch angle and general spin rate. As with any ball, player preferences and individual launch/spin conditions are paramount. Learn more at GolfBallSelector.com, the #1 Ball Selector in Golf.

January 7, 2012 (from Press Release) – Carlsbad, CA. — TaylorMade Golf recently introduced three new golf balls as part of their 2012 product lineup. The new PENTA TP5 replaces the original PENTA TP while also added are two 3-piece designs, the PENTA TP3 and the RocketBallz. Additional details are provided below.

TaylorMade PENTA TP5
“The PENTA TP5 was created for our tour pros, yet it’s a great ball for every level of player,” said John Kawaja, TaylorMade executive vice president. “You don’t need to have a fast swing speed to achieve excellent distance with the PENTA TP5. Golfers will also benefit from the same high greenside spin they have become accustomed to with the original PENTA TP.”

Key to the increased performance of the PENTA TP5 is a 28% lower core compression, combined with the company’s unique Progressive Velocity Design. The result is lower driver spin for more distance and improved softer feel. The PENTA TP 5’s faster outer mantle and thin tour-proven cast urethane cover delivers the amount of spin in the scoring zone that a distance ball can’t compete with. This gives players with slower swing speeds the added control to get up-and-down more often without sacrificing distance performance.

Nearly every member of TaylorMade’s Tour Staff will make the transition to the PENTA TP5 including Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer, Darren Clarke, Justin Rose, and more. Both Kaymer and Clarke played the original PENTA TP en route to winning their first Major Championships.

The performance of the PENTA TP5 is rooted in its five-layer construction — cover, outer mantle, middle mantle, inner mantle and core – which is engineered to optimize performance in five key shot categories that skilled players need – driver, long-irons, middle-irons, short-irons and partial wedges.

The soft, fast Inner Mantle, which surrounds the core, promotes soft feel, high launch and low spin off the long-irons for exceptional distance and high, soft-landing flight that helps the ball sit quickly on the green.

The semi-firm and fast Middle Mantle, which surrounds the Inner Mantle promotes mid-launch and mid-spin off the middle irons. Mid-launch promotes control; mid-spin keeps the ball from up-shooting, ballooning and falling short of the target.

Positioned just beneath the cover, the outer mantle is the fastest mantle in the ball and is easily compressed by slower swing speeds (ball speeds 120 mph and below), helping those players to generate higher ball speed for increased distance.

The new PENTA TP5 will be available at retail February 3, 2012 for $45.99 per dozen.

TaylorMade PENTA TP3
A three-piece, tour caliber golf ball designed to increase spin without sacrificing
distance. Similar to the PENTA TP5, the TP3 model has the same tour-proven cast urethane cover material which results in an incredibly soft golf ball that that will perform beautifully from tee to green. It was engineered for the golfer who could benefit from a ball that spins more – specifically on their long and mid-irons.

“Golfers are all different and require variations in their equipment to best suit their games,” said Kawaja. “The added spin from the TP3 will offer more control for a wider range of golfers while maintaining distance off the tee. Engineering a product with Tour-level performance at a lower price point is a huge plus for the consumer.”

In an effort to produce exceptional feel, maximum speed, and spin control with a three-piece multilayered ball, TaylorMade golf ball engineers had to optimize the core, mantle and cover materials. The PENTA TPs proprietary REACT core technology allows for lower driver spin with added speed to create longer ball flights with the driver. It also increases driver ball speed and lowers driver spin, but on mid and short irons works together with the durable, thin cast urethane cover to create increased spin without sacrificing distance off the tee.

The new PENTA TP3 will be available at retail March 3, 2012 for $34.99 per dozen.

TaylorMade RocketBallz
“The new Rocketballz golf ball is for the golfer who wants to add a little distance and swagger to their game,” said Kawaja. “Golfers of all abilities will add distance to all facets of their game without having to compromise performance around the greens. RBZ is the ultimate “bomb with bite” golf ball.

The ball speed and distance gains from RocketBallz, comes from a proprietary REACT™ core technology and new SPEEDMANTLE™ for increased velocity and added iron spin for all swing speeds. Combining this REACT core and SPEEDMANTLE technologies together, TaylorMade is able to make golf balls that push the velocity limit and maximize distance.

Great feel with improved spin and control around the greens comes from the company’s proprietary thin and soft IOTHANE™ cover. Coupled with the softer SPEEDMANTLE material this ball will provide increased short game spin with mid and short irons, allowing the ball to bite and hold the greens.

The new RocketBallz golf ball will be available at retail on February 3, 2012 for $26.99.

Testing Approach

In testing and evaluation conducted by GolfBallTest.org, the Srixon Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV were subjected to bench testing for compression and cover hardness, and to player and robot testing using the driver, 6-iron and sand wedge.

Source: Digital Ball Catalog™ at GolfBallSelector.com

Notable Observations

Player testing was conducted across a range of ball speeds on the Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV golf balls. Overall, the Z-STAR XV exhibits slightly more spin off all clubs (driver, 6-iron, and 56 degree wedge) than the Z-STAR at the highest ball speed level we tested while at middle and lower ball speeds the Z-STAR exhibits slightly higher spin than the Z-STAR XV. Both the Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV have mid range launch angle characteristics.

Driver Testing:

The spin rate of the Z-STAR was approximately 150-250 RPM’s higher than the Bridgestone Tour B330 and Bridgestone Tour B330-S across low, mid and higher ball speeds. The Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV overall distances were 2-4% lower when compared to the Tour B330 and Tour B330-S due to a lower launch angle and the higher spin for all ball speeds tested.

6-Iron Testing:

6-iron testing across all ball speeds for both the Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV exhibited less spin and slightly longer carry distance when compared with the new Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x at the highest ball speed level only. All other speeds in this comparison were similar. When compared to the Bridgestone Tour B330 and Tour B330-S, the Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV exhibited more spin and less carry distance at all ball speeds tested.

Sand Wedge Testing:

Both the Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV had notably more spin for a sand wedge than the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x at all ball speeds tested but slightly more spin when compared to the Nike 20XI-S and 20XI-X. Launch angles were slightly lower across all ball speeds when compared to the Bridgestone Tour B330 and Tour B330-S as well as the Nike 20XI-S and 20XI-X and the Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

Bench Testing:

Our bench testing indicates that the Z-STAR has an overall compression reading of 93 points, which is about 5% higher than the overall compression reading of the 2009 Z-STAR. This reading is approximately 5% lower than the Titleist Pro V1 golf ball. The Z-STAR XV has an overall compression reading of 104 points, which is similar to the 2009 Z-STAR X. This reading is approximately 4% lower than the Pro V1x golf ball. Additional bench testing measuring cover hardness revealed that the Z-STAR was slightly softer cover hardness than the Z-STAR XV. Both golf balls exhibited slightly firmer cover hardness than both the <strong Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

On-Course Player Comments:

“The Z-STAR feels softer than the new Nike 20XI-S and 20XI-X balls and comparable to the Bridgestone Tour B330 and Tour B330-S especially off the putter and sand wedge” – “When comparing the Z-STAR to the Z-STAR XV I seem to get more spin and feel around the greens with the Z-STAR XV although the Z-STAR seems to carry further.”

“The Z-STAR spins a little less than the new Titleist Pro V1. On approach shots, I liked the way the Z-STAR hit and released a little allowing aggressive shots without worrying about too much spin. Additionally I really liked the Z-STAR off my putter as it felt solid but not hard”.

Summary:

Golfers looking for a “tour ball” priced golf ball should consider the Srixon Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV golf balls. Golfers looking for a more penetrating ball flight off the tee may benefit from the lower launch characteristics of both of these balls. Additionally, both exhibited slightly more spin across all clubs when compared to other “tour balls”. The Z-STAR should appeal to golfers of all abilities with its slightly softer cover hardness and consistent spin across all ball speeds tested. The Z-STAR XV should appeal to golfers looking for a slightly firmer golf ball on and around the green.

In choosing the right golf ball, GolfBallSelector.com believes that golfers interested in the Srixon Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV should consider its “best fit” potential for their game in the context of their own preferences and the trade-offs they are prepared to take for distance, control and feel and according to their own unique ballistics measures of ball speed, launch angle and general spin rate. As with any ball, player preferences and individual launch/spin conditions are paramount. Learn more at GolfBallSelector.com, the #1 Ball Selector in Golf.
